Aligarh. A case has been registered against Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam for making anti-national statements in Assam and Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. The Imam is seen in a video viral on social media saying that Assam has been cut off from India.

He had said anti-nationals against the Citizenship Amendment Act on 16 January while participating in the Protest organized at Aligarh Muslim University. Apart from Aligarh, the Assam government has also filed a lawsuit against Sharjeel.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he was surprised by Sharjeel's statement that is causing unrest in the country.
