Government intends to shut down old thermal power plants dealing with widespread carbon emissions
Rs.4,400 crore allocation for 'clean air initiatives' by states
New Delhi. The Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman today presented various proposals related to the environmental sector in the Union Budget 2020-21, with special focus on the government's goal of adapting to climate change by focusing on disaster enabled infrastructure. Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the Union Budget for the financial year 2020-21 in Parliament today said that Disaster Enabled Infrastructure Alliance (CDRI) was launched in September 2019, whose secretariat is in Delhi. He said, 'This global partnership will help in meeting many Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as the goals of Sendai Framework. This will make it easier to adapt to climate change with a focus on disaster efficient infrastructure.
'Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)' mentioned under the Paris Agreement, 2015, keeping in view the developmental imperatives of a country Underlined the efforts being made by the government towards ensuring '. He assured that India's commitments would be implemented as concrete steps in various sectors by the concerned departments and ministries through the normal budget process. Smt Nirmala Sitharaman threw light on the issue of widespread carbon emissions due to old thermal power plants. The Finance Minister spoke of the government's proposal to close such plants and use the vacant land for alternative purposes.
The Finance Minister did not provide for the availability of clean air in cities with a population of more than 10 lakh. But also expressed concern. He explained in detail the Government's intention to encourage the States to formulate and implement schemes to ensure maximum clean air. An allocation of Rs 4,400 crore has been made for the period 2020-21 for this initiative and the appropriate criteria for the related initiatives will be notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change soon.
