Kolkata. West Bengal has been the frontrunner in the country in terms of vegetable production in 2018-19. Information has been given in the recently released horticultural production data by the central government. According to the state-wise horticultural production data in the country, the production of vegetables in Bengal in the financial year 2018-19 was 29.9 million tonnes. During this time it is the highest vegetable production in any state in the country. UP was second in this case.
Vegetable production in Uttar Pradesh stood at 27.7 million tonnes. In its last financial year 2017-18, Bengal was second with production of 27.7 million tonnes. At that time Uttar Pradesh was at the top with a production of 28.8 million tonnes. According to the data, Bengal accounted for 15.9 percent of the total vegetable production in the country in 2018-19. The share of UP in total vegetable production was 14.9 percent, 9.6 percent of Madhya Pradesh, 9 percent of Bihar and 6.8 percent of Gujarat. On this achievement, the West Bengal Chief Minister's agricultural advisor, Pradeep Kumar Majumdar said that this is a great achievement, full credit goes to our hardworking farmers. He said that under the direction of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, we are helping to increase the income of farmers. This eventually leads to increased production.
